Today, there are variety of different types of tools that are used to build and repair electronic devices and equipment. What would be considered electronic tools includes: wire cutters, clippers, crimpers, soldering irons, diagonal cutters, razor cutting tool tweezers, multimeters, and oscilloscopes, just to name a few. Basically any tool that is used to work on or test out electronics can be considered an electronic tool. As with any kind of tool, the most important thing is to take care of it.
Taking Care of Your Electronic Tools
From the simplistic to the most advanced, electronic tools have a wide range of technology and capabilities, and they need to be taken care of in order to insure that they will always work properly. If you clean your electronic tools after each use, they should never need any major repairs and for the most part always work well. Hand tools such as wire cutters, tweezers and crimpers should be cleaned thoroughly with soap and water or rubbing alcohol after each use and then dried completely.
If there is any type of build up on your tools, you can apply WD40 which is a good tool cleaner and also helps to prevent rust. It is important after you clean your tools that you dry them completely and lightly oil them. When it becomes necessary to sharpen your tools (such as wire cutters), be sure to sharpen both sides. A fine file should do the trick, but use it lightly because if you remove too much metal they will not close properly.
For your soldering iron you can get professional solder tip cleaner. This is basically a steel wool that will remove any oxidation from the tip. It is recommended that you clean your tip regularly in order for the soldering iron to continue to work properly and not become contaminated with solder residues. If you clean your tools regularly and take good care of them, they should last you through thousands of projects.
